Genesis of SEDP

In view of prevailing food shortage, socio-political unrest and a state of hopelessness and fatalism during the period from mid-sixties up to mid seventies particularly in West Bengal and its neighbourhood it was indeed needed concerted and committed societal and developmental efforts. The Barrackpore Diocese of Church of North India - CNI was one of the civil society groups in that context, which decided to take up the extremely challenging and demanding task of responding in a planned and effective manner to the critical social, economic and political needs of the time. This led to the formation of Socio Economic Development Programme (SEDP). There were some other relevant dimensions, which motivated and reinforced the formation of SEDP. These were:

The Churches had been for a long time very meaningfully and effectively engaged in the fields of institutional education and health. The involvement in Integrated Rural Community Development was however very much limited. It was now the high time for the Church to enter into the field of Rural Development in an effective and committed manner. At that juncture Bishop of Diocese of Barrackpore took the pioneering decision to establish Socio Economic Development Programme (SEDP)

The Bishop not only drew some talented young Christians from the Diocese into SEDP but also was as much open for bringing in committed professionals of other faiths.
